2.25 minutes in this video is where my inspirational film starts.
These are my thoughts about it and how it is inspiring me. I have decided to use a short film from a student in a UTC college for my inspiration and I decided to us this because it effected me so much to were I wanted to do something in that style. The movie is a short film and it has only a few actors in it. There is a story line of the ending of the world however it was more about showing the last few seconds of people accepting what is about to happen and the love/ beauty people have for life and each other. I want to use this emotional piece to be a part of my film but also the scary feeling of the end. They used a countdown digital clock that was the anxiety filled shot to were it makes people worried hearing the clock and wanting it to stop. This is what is making the film heart dropping but also emotional and loving. This is why I liked it and it was done amazingly. The camera quality and shots were something that was meaningful as well.
Research into Genre and conventions for short films
I have a few short films that I have watched that I really enjoy and just generally like watching as my own for of entertainment. There is a short film that has inspired me massively for this unit and there are some that are just inspiring in themselves and have helped me get an understanding what a short film should need and look like. This is the main inspiration for my short film, this is what I have tried to make my movie based on and what I wanted to recreate in a way. 2.25 minutes in this video is where my inspirational film starts.

What inspired me was that it was so emotional but also very anxiety filled short film. The thought of only having 5 minutes left of your life right there and then after a text gives off that twisty stomach feeling and anxiety filled thoughts. The panic then drops and you see everyone's raw emotions are captured in each shot, it is just done amazingly with the shots and angles. The slow motion edit on the shots were every powerful showing that emotion come through. The camera angles being up close show that personal emotion and connection with the audience and actors is powerful for this type of movie. I like this so much and I wanted to capture that raw emotion too. I think if i had more time filming I could have gotten these shots a bit more clearer and longer. However, I am happy with my shots and I feel like I have captured the raw emotion that my actors were feeling in this filming.
What was different to my film and theirs, I decoded that I was going to have a main character and a bit more of a story line instead of different reactions to the devastating news. I decided that I am going to have a main character where we see her life a bit more than anyone else's and we see that she doesn't have that emotion that everyone else might have been feeling. This main character has an unbothered outlook on life. This is different to the short film that has been my inspiration but I didn't wasn't to fully copy it I wanted to have my own twist on the storyline. I also wanted to have a more of a deeper storyline so if I was to continue making this into a mainstreaming film I have a main character with a full life I can create for her. I have been thinking about the future if I was to expand that film I have created, that I have more of a storyline.
I then have two animation short films that I have watched for years because they are very interesting and entertaining. I think they are fantastic and I am so impressed with the work and thought that has been put into this work.
Best Friend - Animation Short Film 2018 - GOBELINS (youtube.com)
The inspiration that I have found through watching this short film is the create story line, this has a big twist in it which is a code for the codes and conventions for short films. This had an amazing twist and the way it has portrayed and what I have found in this short film is there is a lot of emotion shown through out the animated characters. I really like how even through the animation the emotion was shown and the audience can feel it thorough the characters. This is what I want to do with my short film too and this is what I want to use in my short film.
There's a Man in the Woods (Animated Short Film by Jacob Streilein) (youtube.com)
This is a very creative and deep mysterious short film, I really like how they made a storyline innocent but not at the same time, the creators have made it dark and mysterious but still feeling like a child like animation. The way they have made it feel like a thriller but not at the same time links into the short film I have created, my short film is emotional but also has that hint of anxiety but mysterious atmosphere to it. This is a mix of emotions and genres but I am hoping I have played it out well with my filming and shots. I just wanted to use this inspirational short film as an example of a short film showing more than one genre and feeling in it. This short film also has that dark twist to it and that has really inspired adding twists into the short films. Mine was more of an emotional twist that I am not cared but I am unbothered about the end of the world.
Concept
-end of world
-loving and emotional
-thrilling/ heart dropping
I have my set idea of having a film that is about the end of the world and then it has many different shots of how people are reacting too it. It is going to be a beautiful and scary feeling. This is want want in my film. I want this film to be some end of the world vibe but I don't want it to be too much like a scary war film. I want to effect people in a very emotional way. I think that I want the movie to be less of a specific story but more of a story that raises questions that even I don't know yet.
The name I'm thinking of calling it 'The End', this was the first idea name I had and I would like to keep it as the name. This shows the audience what the movie could be about.
My short film is about the end of the world, love, friendship, acceptance, beauty, sadness, anxiety, loss and more. This film is meant to be something that is going to effect your emotions and make you think. It is also there to remember to tell the person you love, 'I love you', to forgive the people you need to forgive, to hug the people you miss, to talk to the people you need.
There is going to be an element of thriller because its the end of the world and there will be some sort of siren/ countdown that is going to create that scary heart dropping feeling. I don't want there to be any dialogue in it but I want there to be background noise, the sounds of what would really be going on. I want there to be a song in there that is going to reflect love and memories, at this stage I'm not too sure what that is yet. There will be a cliff-hanger, the last shot I want to be either something loving and emotional or something that shows that it is the end of the end.
I have now slightly changed my story, I am going to keep my original ideas in the blog to make sure you can see my process of changing to story to make it work. I have decided to focus the story on one main character which I'm hoping it can be me but I might have to use a model if it is too hard to film myself.
For this new unit I am going to be working on my own. I do like working with other people but for this short film I am wanting to do it myself. I will have some friends be my actors/ actresses in the short film including myself in the film too but I do not want to work with anyone else in my class for this film. I'm going to have some friends that are outside of college to be in my short film.
Convention of short film
-short in length
-minimal settings
-smaller actors
-low budget
-smaller amount of characters
-focus narrative
-cliff-hanger
-open ending
-minimal VFX/ SFX (visual and sound effects)
-simplistic technical set up
-minimal sound track
Genre
This movie is going to be a hybrid genre film, emotional and thriller. The theme I want to do is thriller, it will be a softer thriller because I want to make sure that I put some emotional elements in the short film. It will be an emotional thriller. The end of the world but the acceptance and love of the end. Through out the short film there will be shown different emotions and different feelings within the movie. I think its a soft thriller because it is a 'end of the world' movie which is very thrilling but it doesn't have that distinctive fear factor depending on how the audience feels watching the movie.
Mise-en-scene, settings, costumes, actors, lighting and positioning, these are all of the simple main things that mise-en-scene include. These are all the important things to think about when starting a film. The mise-en-scene in horror thrillers tend to be dark, rural deserted locations, places that are abandoned and isolated. This is perfect for the end of the world feeling of being lonely and isolation half way through I want to make sure I get an emotional feeling to where it is less scary and more about the last few minutes of life with the people you love or if you are alone too.
The emotional aspect when looking at mise-en-scene it is based around blue and grey colours expressing sadness or red and orange colour to express anger or black to express loss, this is good to then incorporate in my movies. If I go into editing or putting certain emotions in certain rooms with those colours that reflect the emotion this helps the audience get into those emotions and feel what my characters are feeling. The settings must mean something when looking at a film. This is why if the emotions match with the room and atmosphere this makes the audience feel and think like the character in the film.
Camera angles, sound, narration, these are important too. The angles of the camera I am wanting the to be very straight on maybe a bit more dramatic too and shows the full image that I am trying to capture, to make a message that its not a creepy or horror thriller but a very anxious atmosphere with an emotional twist thriller. The sound isn't going to be too important in the film I want it too be very natural with a lot of natural sound instead of speaking. There will be some sound effects added in, I want sirens for the dark and ominous feeling, I would like the ticking sound of a countdown clock which will be linked up with the actual countdown visual. They are the only added sounds but I am thinking about music but i will have that as an experiment instead of a final idea.
I have listed a few of the conventions of a short film and I am gong to make sure I hit all of those conventions. The film will be short in length, I'm not too sure on hat it will be but I'm aiming for longer than the minimum which is 2 minutes and 30 seconds. There is a bullet point of minimal settings, this is good for me because I am only going to film in two arears. This should be good to where it isn't boring watching on setting and it is a setting that is outside, then another which is inside. The actors in my film are going to be limited, there will be more than I thought but they are not constantly in the film, there is myself as the main character and then a few extra actors that will be in only half of the film. It is low on budget because it is going to be filmed in my own home and I don't need any extra props or I don't need to buy any extra things on top of what I have already.
The narrative has to be a focus narrative and I have a story mountain and story board to help me construct my narrative, I'm going to make sure I use those to follow what scenes need to be when and what I am gong to be filming. A cliff-hanger is mentioned in the conventions, this would be good for my movie because my movie raises a lot of questions. A cliff-hanger is good at leaving suspense and leaving the audience asking questions. I want my short film to be asking questions and feeling like they want to see more and so I think that this convention will be used. This also links in with an open ending. I will not be having any visual effects within my short film. However, I will have some sound effects, I want to have sirens and a countdown sound. This is the only sound effects I will use so they are very simplistic, I am hoping that it is going to be ominous and suspenseful to give it that fear factor feeling.
Setting info
I am planning to film this movie in a few locations, the main location is going to be my personal house, there are many scenes of me and they are going to be filmed in my house, there is another scene where it is based outside, I am thinking of using the local park that is very close to me which I what I think will be safe and good to film in. When the scenes are going to be based in other people house, I am just going to use my house and film indifferent rooms to make it look like it is in other peoples homes without using other peoples homes. The main locations are going to be my local park and my house. This will be a simple and easy set up and so I am hoping this is going to make filming easy.
Types of Lighting
There are three types of lighting, natural, chiaroscuro and 3 point lighting. I will be using natural lighting, i find that when looking at the genre of film they are very dark and uses a lot of natural lighting to show that it is real and you as the audience feel like you are put in these situations. The natural lighting is there to make you feel like you are actually there and it makes you feel like it is real and that this situation is a real life situation. That is the atmosphere i want to give in my film and so i will use the natural light to capture this. Chiaroscuro lighting is high contrast lighting that utilizes a lowkey lighting set up. This is to achieve contrast between the subject in the film and the dark background. 3 Point lighting involves using three light sources placed in three different positions. By playing with the size, distance, intensity, and position of these light sources, including their degree angle, it is possible to control how light and shadow fall on a subject, creating different moods. All of these lighting techniques are very good in film and they all capture different moods and atmospheres but i want mine to look real and not like i have made the lighting. My film is to make you feel like you are in it and that is why i have used natural lighting.
Personnel
I am going to be the main character in the movie but I also have a few extra actors ad actresses that I would like to use in my movie. I would like my dad, brother, brothers friends, possibly my boyfriend to be in this movie too. I would like to think I can get a few other people in the movie too but so far these are the actors that are comfortable and willing to be in my film. I will only film ho is comfortable to be in it. There is no other characters that are needed but I will be the videographer and the editor too. I will be everything that is needed in the film so a director and producer too. For each of my extra character i am wanting to have them as each different reaction in my film. The first one is gong to react stressed worried and calling people making sure they are safe. Then my next character is going to be sat, mother and son, accepting there fate and what is about to happen. My bother and his friends are going to be the next characters that are reacting but they are confused and they don't know what is going on.
Equipment
There is gong to be many different props but they are all going to already be in the household that are already put in place. There are scenes in my room and kitchen to make it look like a natural movie I am going to make sure everything is actually natural and already in a place where it would be as if I was at home. I want this movie to not look too perfect, the bed can be messy or a cup and be misplaced so it looks as real and natural as it can be. Thinking about filming now, I will be having canon camera to film all of my work I have not a lot of experience but this will help me learn and perfect my filming with this camera, the shots will be clear and visible for the audience. Then I would like the have a tripod because I am doing everything myself I am going to need a tripod to film myself and possibly and then I will be filming the other scenes. The tripod is going to help me film when I cant film myself holding the camera. Then just for a few extras I will be getting a spare battery and SD card so i can take in precautions that I might run out of battery half way through.
Budget
This movie is based in my house with my household things so I don't need to go out and buy any props; they are all going to be borrowed or already in possession. This movie is not going to cost me anything to release or pay actors because they are all family so this movie is very low budget to where it is going to cost nothing for me. When it comes to breaks in filming for myself ten I will be making sure everyone including my actors have food and water but overall I wont be sending any money to make the film.
Legal and Ethical
Legal and ethical issues can be something that will be a concern in every movie. When is comes to my movie there wont be anything that is going to be a legal and ethical concern.
Looking at legal issues, such as copyright I will not have an issue with this because I am going to have music in this and if I did I would find some music on a copyright free music to were I wont be charged for using the music. This is good for al different types of projects and I have used this before but I think overall I am not going to be using any music. I will be using sound effect which means I need to find some copyright free sound effects which I have used before and so I know that it is going to be safe for me to use in my short film.
Another legal issue is privacy, I need to make sure that when I am filming i have confirmation I can film who is in the shot. I will also make sure that the scene is clear before I turn on the camera. If it is a public area we have to make sure that it is clear of people in the shot so we respect the publics privacy.
There are a few documents that you have to fill in legally when filming a movie. For example there are location release to make sure you can film on certain properties but because it is my house I a filming in then I am happy to say I don't have to fill one of these out. There are talent release forms that actors have to fill out to make sure they have permission to be filmed and they are happy to be shown to the public. This is something that all movie industries have to consider because you need the consent to let people film. This is so there is no privacy issues and legal issues with filming and having no permission.
The BBFC is something important in all movie industries. The BBFC stands for British Board of Film Classification, this is the independent organisation that regulates the ages of films and what is allowed to be shown to the public. The BBFC, the law and under the 'harm test', we pay particular attention to content showing illegal drugs, sexual activity, and criminal, violent or horrific behavior. Other legal considerations include indecent images of children, animal cruelty, obscenity, racial hatred and human rights. These are the rules that you have to follow to make sure your film doesn't get in any legal issues. I will make sure that I will be following all of these rules even before I film anything so I know my film can be shown to the public and that I know what ages can watch my film or not.
Ethical issues shouldn't be an issues for me either. There are a few things I will point out when it comes to making a short film i need to make sure I don't worry about it. I am not going to be filming anything that is offensive or inappropriate, I need to make sure i keep in mind what I am filming and who will see it. The film will not contain anything that is inappropriate and this film I am creating is going to be appropriate for children even though I am not appealing my movie to them. Knowing I can show any age makes me sure my film will not have anything that is offensive to anyone or inappropriate.
Representation/ stereotyping can become and issue and it might be an issue for me. My movie is very emotional and stereotypically women are emotional and men are the survivors but in my movie and my opinion men can be emotional and women can be leaders so in my movie I have a lot more of the male characters showing off different emotions and feelings but the female and main character is the one the doesn't care and survives the end of the world. This can be an issue for some people but it is not everyone's opinion and it is not an offensive movie so I am happy I won't run into this issue but some people might disagree with the casting.
Culture and diversity inclusion, is something that we should think about in films, the film is made by someone with two different cultures and it also has different cultures within the film so people can watch my film and feel inspired and happy that there cultures are include. I like to feel like everyone can be included any work that I do so I am going to make sure I include everyone I my movie, this is to help the audience feel comfortable that there is a lot of diversity in the film industry too. It would be unethical to make the movie not include different diversity's, this is due to the world of film change over time and all genders, sexualities and races/ religions are accepted and shown in todays film industry.
Within the film industry exploitation has become and issue, this is where one person is doing all the work and doesn't get the chance to have a job or take part. This is going to be a problem in big groups but when it comes to me and my film I am going to be doing it alone so I will not have an issue with exploitation because I am doing all of the work myself.
Target Audience
My target audience for my movie is going to be I think someone that enjoys the feeling of emotions, sad, happy, anger and frustration. However, someone that also likes a thrilling anxious feelings, but that is depending on who watches it. This movie is about the end of the world and so if people feel a bit uneasy about the through of that maybe this movie isn't for them. This has a very nice message and meaning to it so it depends on who watches it and takes up what message is being shown. This movie is a good idea to raise questions so this short film is good for people that like a mystery or a cliff hanger from the information they get.
I would think that this movie is for everyone to watch, I think that this would not appeal to kids because it is a dark and horror feeling movie. I would think that it would be inappropriate to show a child of the end of the world kind of movie however there isn't anything that is inappropriate to show to children if they were there when someone is watching my short film. This movie would appeal to teens and young adults, older adults too. I don't think that elderly people would like my short film unless they like the idea of an end the world film. Teens and young adults would definitely be my age range appeal because there is a young adult playing the main character. I also think that a thriller is more appealing to those who like that rush of different kind of emotions when watching my short film.
I want my movie to appeal to everyone but I think my demographics will include he age range of 15-40 year old's. I just think that this is the type of movie that would appeal to this age range that would like an emotional and deep movie but also has the teen movie vibe, it is not meant to be a serious movie but it has a very nice message to it. I don't have a specific gender, race, religion or social class. I think this is a movie that everyone can enjoy. The psychometrics that I am looking for is someone who is into a movie that has meaning and emotions. I also want someone the enjoys someone wanting to have a cliffhanger or ask questions. I also want someone that likes the soft thriller feel, this movie is the end of the world dystopia kind of film and so I want someone that enjoys that mystery movie.
My evidence for this target audience existing is a film called Bird Box that has a genre relating to the apocalyptic thriller like my film.

Story Mountain
This is a story mountain about my short story and there are a few different stages to it.
At the start I am thinking of doing two different things, one is that I would do the end short the thing that happens at the end and make that the beginning shit to make people intrigued to watch it and want to know what happened to this main character to get them in that type of situation. Due to the first shot idea being the end the shot was going to show the last girl alive after the end of the world and make people question what happened and why did she survive. I want to make people question a lot of things but enjoy what they are watching and be affected by this. This is why I thought about putting my end shot as the first shot too. It rises questions and it makes people want to watch it brings the curiosity out of people. Then we have my second idea which will start off as me or my friend depending on which I will choose to be my main character idea, but I will have the main character start off by doing daily activities like a normal person would. Waking up, putting clothes on just a lengthy part of the main character making sure she gets all of her daily routines started off.
This then leads to the build up, I don't really want anything major to happen because I want to make sure that it is all still casual and simple in the beginning until the problem does actually come. In the build up I want to make sure that I will have my main character get some weird signs as in the tv might go off or the lights will flicker to make people think that something is going to happen and to think that something is coming.
I then want to have the problem happen, the problem will be the sirens going off, the news coming on about some sort of lockdown and the lights shutting off. things not working anymore. That is when I want there to be a pause in everything and everyone as in I want there to be the silence to be loud. I want the main character to be there first one to listen and react to this before I do different clips of then other people receiving the news. I want there to be different scenes of people reacting to what is happening. a lad being panicked, a dad and child to be sad, a old man with his dog/ cat having fun and accepting it, a couple young girl and boy spending time together and hugging each other, a group of friends young lads playing football outside and hearing the sirens. These are some kind of examples that I would use to get my message across that people will experience the end differently and that you can either accept it or you can morn or you can be happy about it there are so many ways to interpretate it and then other people may relate to the different reactions which means different people will be draw to my movie. This would be the main part of my movie and I know it isn't a straight story but I want to make sure that I can get the different people views in the movie because that what truly got my inspired and I wanted to see if I could create my own. This will be around the middle to near ending of my story this will be the issue.
Then we get the the second to last area of my movie this is where we get to the girl and getting her full reaction of this matter. This girl is going to be shocked but not too bothered about it. She doesn't get a call off anyone she is alone at this point in her house. There will be a question raised as to why she is so not phased about it. This is not too much my concern because I want to make sure that people do raise up and ask questions. She is going to go in her room, grab a bag and head out of the house. This is again going to make people wonder where she is going. She comes back from the shop and we see her just chilling out, making something to eat. This is were we could get a few clips of either what the end of the world is going to look like or a few clips of what caused the end of the world or we could get a few clips of people rioting and trying to get out of the place.
Then we have the ending, this is going to be the end shot of the girl in the end of the world. Looking dirty, gross like a survivor that you would see in movies when they look like they have been trying to survive for a while. I want people to now wonder, is she the only one alive?, is she the cause if it all?, why is she still alive?, who is she really and did she see this coming?. This is how I want people to think ,ore and want to watch more of the movie. This could also be the first shot but I don't really want to do that and see what happens. These are all the final ideas that I am going to use in my story and it is all down on a piece of paper helping me right my script too. I don't want any words in it unless it is just simple background noise and one words phrases.

Release Schedule
I will be releasing my movie around October time, this is because it is a very thriller end of the world based movie and i want it to have that ominous connection that Halloween has. I am going to be releasing it publicly on YouTube and in the film industries for everyone to see. By releasing this on YouTube this is going to let me reach a larger audience and a different audience. This will attract more teens who use YouTube, this could help students and school as inspiration. So this is good to reach a different targe audience. It is reaching both my thriller drama lovers and my emotional movie lovers. By releasing this in October it is going to reach my right target audience and it is going to reached wider range of people if it is released on YouTube and any other social media platforms.
