What is an audience and why are the important?
Without audiences there will be no media which shows how important media is.
Media organizations produce media and texts to make profit- no audience = no profit.
The mass media is becoming more competitive than ever to attract more and more audiences in different ways and stay profitable.
Nothing in life is free, free apps always have adverts, unless you pay to remove adds. websites and search engines work hard to target you with ads whilst you consume 'free online' versions of your media product.
These adverts are carefully constructed and selected for the primary audience for each test
With newspapers, printing less copies and switches to online distribution can reduce production costs.
fragmented audiences- old media like tv print radio which used to have high audience numbers most now work harder to maintain audience numbers. digital tech has also led to an increasing uncertainly over how we defines an audience.
mass audience- often termed broadcast audience, these who consume mainstream or popular texts such as soaps or sitcoms. media and communication that targets a very large group of people.
niche audience- much smaller but very influential. a niche audience is a small, select group of people with a very unique interest, such as cars or dance.
group A- lawyers, doctors.
group B- teachers, managers.
group C1- nurses. bankers.
group C2- plumbers, electricians.
group D- manual worker, drivers.
group E- unemployed, students, pensioners.
mainstream audiences:
It will appeal to a wide range of people. blockbusters and videos games produced and distributed by some large conglomerates will generally make a large profits.
niche audience:
the audience of specialist interest media product that may only appeal to a small number of people of theses that fall within the specific demographic profile. often small and are target towards special interests, usually gains loyal following to generate profile.
demographic- age, gender, race, sexuality.
THE SUN MAGAZINE AND FIRST DRIVES
The sun magazine is something that is well known and has been popular for a while.
A niche magazine brand is first drives which is a car magazine, this interests me as i like cars however, not a lot of people do or they wont choose this as their choice of magazine. this is a niche market because it is only advertising the profile of people that like cars, the stereotypical demographic of this magazine would be middle ages men. however, there will be a few different people that enjoy this magazine.
