Mise-en-scene: a French term meaning what is put into a scene or frame, visual information in front of the camera, communicates essentials information to the audience, made up of 5 elements costumes/ set design/ lighting/ facial expressions/ positioning of camera.
All the elements of mise-en-scene are used to describe the giegetic world (gienetic world- the fictional world.)
Setting and props- Setting and locations play and important pert in film making and are not just backgrounds, sets are either built from scratch or a great deal of time is spent to find a setting which is already exists, settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then a different turn.
costume, hair and makeup- costumes, hair and makeup act as an instant indicator to us of a characters personality, status and job, it tells us immediately whether the film is set in the present and what society/ or culture it will centre around.
facial expressions- facial expressions provide a clear indicator of how someone is feeling. smiling is happy crying is sad and you can capture their feelings within their body language too.
positioning a character or object- within the frame can draw our attention to an object or character.
