Brand M3 - codes and conventions
Codes and Conventions
There are different types of codes and conventions that can be used in different media’s, in my drinks brand I have used different codes and conventions within my work. Codes and conventions are something you use in media to generally just do something, they are the building blocks in media. They are there to relate either an atmosphere, feelings, symbols, meanings and messages. There are different sectors that are within the different codes and conventions. There are three different types of main codes, symbolic codes, technical codes and written codes. Conventions are expected ways in which codes are organised in a product.

It might not seem as noticeable but I have used some colour symbolism within my work. In the adverts I have used certain colours in the print and web adverts that symbolise different feelings I want to give off. For example I want my work to look calming but a little pop of bright colour, simple but effective, fruity but not too extreme. What I mean by this is I have used calming colours such as pastel greens and blues, these colours are used because they symbolise nature and nature symbolises a calming atmosphere.
I have used colours such as oranges and browns to make sure I relate it to the flavour of the drink which is fruity orange. I have made these oranges less bright and not vibrant but with the blues they look like they are standing out, the reasoning for this is because I want it to be targeted to an older generation as well as the younger generation. The oranges and brown symbolise summer fruits and positives times, I want this to be a very light happy drink instead of something that is dull and plain. Due to my adverts not having people within the adverts it doesn’t use many codes on conventions such as looking at the actors or the scene but I have used things such ad fonts and colours to symbolise different things within my work. The colour palettes are very different but all related around the summer colours because I wanted this drink to give off that summer beautiful positive vibes.
The slogan that i have used is not direct to the audience telling them to sip Satara. I want the audience to savour the taste and to make sure they get every flavour that's in the drink. The slogan is short and snappy. It also matches with the drink and the vibe the drink shows. I real like how straight to the point it is and it is a direct message to give to the audience. The colour for this is white and stands out from the colourful background. This is the same as some big brands such a Maltesers chocolate. They use white to stand out from the bright colours. Doing this makes the eyes draw right to the thing that stands out and that's what you want when looking at the media. It is very important the that logos and slogans stand out because that is what we want the audience to think about when looking at my drink. They need to make sure that it is clear, it reminds people of the drink and it highlights the slogan clearly.
The backgrounds also are very important like i mentioned things need to stand out. Well, if you have a plain background then it might not draw attention to the product. If the page is full and filled with colour and words that are eye catching they will get the eye of the audience you need. I have made sure that i have a full background that also links in with the atmosphere of the drink. My drink is a fruity drinks so having the flavour on the background can make the audience get a quick idea what vibe the drink is without even looking or reading the texts. This is great to get in the minds and catch the eyes of the audience. This links in with the pictures used too. Linking images that you have created with the product helps the audience get an idea of what it is. I have oranges to show the audience the flavour of the drinks. Maltesers chocolate has the actual image of the chocolate onto the packaging. That then makes the audience know what they are buying if they are interested.
Within my work I haven’t added too much text because I wanted to make it all about the drink but the written codes and language I have used in my adverts is short and simple to try and entice the audience to look at my add. Having too much writing within the advert can become too much text for people to read which is why I have only used short snappy but noticeable text, sip satara is the tag line and it’s simple and effective. It means enjoy your drink, make sure you taste every flavour and be positive.
This drink is for anyone and everyone, that likes orange fruity flavours. Speaking of text I have used a certain front for my text which is called acid fruit, I found this on a website and I thought it looked perfect for my adverts, The text is a serif font, I wanted it to be like this because it gives off a very different atmosphere to a sans serif text. The text I used was classy but simple so it didn’t look too fun and it appealed to the target audience I wanted.
My graphic editing skills i have added on my adverts are something that is very important due to all the adverts being edited. I edited them using photoshop and I got my inspiration from my mood boards and sketches, the graphics are meant to look like drawings of oranges like a print. This is because I didn’t want it to look too perfect I wanted that simple art feeling to it, it all reminds me of summer and that is why I want it to symbolise that. The editing is important it is created how I want it to look so I needed to make sure my photoshop skills were up to standard for what I wanted to do.
Everything within the adverts is what I have edited and created, this is why I wanted it to look more arty to put something personal to it. This all matches the theme and style of the adverts that I wanted to create.
