Radio P1- Types of Radio
Types of Radio
Public Radio- BBC Radio
A public radio station is a radio network that receives funds from both the government and the public. An example of a pubic radio i have found is BBC Radio, this is a radio station that is broadcasted on various FM and AM frequencies, DAB digital radio and live streaming on BBC Sounds so everyone can listen to it. This radio station covers most of the music genres, as well as covering different areas local news. BBC Radio has a specific target audience, 15-29 year old's. This is because they are playing music that is very popular music with various music genres. It is also known for its engaging presenters and lively entertainment shows so the older generation will also be entertained with interviews and lively chats with various people.
Greg James is known to be the radio presenter for BBC, this is good for the target audience because they address the audience in an appropriate. They are lively friendly and engaging which is good to gain focus on the audience. Its work is funded principally by an annual television license fee which is charged to all British households, companies, and organizations using any type of equipment to receive or record live television broadcasts or to use the BBC's streaming service, iPlayer for example. This is good because people that listen to this radio station will be using things such as cars, house radios, phones and TV to listen to it so if more people will listen to it then money will be coming in for the radio station.
This type of radio is very popular, the top 20 NPR-affiliated public radio stations (by listenership) had on average a total weekly listenership of about 8 million in 2022, down 10% from 2021.
Regional Radio- BBC local radio
Reginal radio means the radio, television and data broadcasts that cover the landscape of at least three neighbor provinces and minimum 70 percent landscape of a geographical region. It is a local radio station that only plays in you area. An example of this can be the BBC Local Radio, tis is obviously the same as BBC Radio however it is just for you local are such as receiving news that is more local to you. The target audience for this radio station is over fifty year old's, each station produces local programmers on weekdays from 6am until 2pm. This changes the target audience because if people are at work then they have no chance to listen to it but if it is targeted to someone over fifty who has maybe not have a job so they have time to watch it.
Chris Burns is the radio presenter for BBC local radio, they have to be able to present respectfully and make sure that the languages they us to address the audience needs to be a bit calmer for the certain target audience they have. Despite being authorized to start local radio, there was no license fee money to pay for it. The government and the BBC devised a method of alternative funding. The BBC would pay for setting up the stations but local authorities would be encouraged to meet the running costs.
Internet radio- Smooth Radio
Internet radio, also known as Online radio, web radio, net radio, streaming radio, e-radio and IP radio, is a digital audio service transmitted via the Internet. An example i have found is Smooth Radio. Smooth radio is a form of internet radio but it also streams on things like FM, AM and DAB. Smooth London is a regional radio station owned and operated by Global as part of the Smooth Radio network. The station targets listeners mainly over the age of 40, quite similar to BBC Radio 2.
These are the presenters for Smooth Radio, Kate Garraway, Jenni Falconer, Myleene Klass, Angie Greaves, Tina Hobley, Paul Phear. There is a few here but each presenter needs to know how to talk to the type of target audience. The presenter needs to know that smooth radio will be targeted to the older generation which means they can be welcoming but not too over the top because if it gets too much then people that age are willing to turn it off so you need to make sure you are welcoming but not too over the top. They are owned by Global which also owns many other radio stations such as Heart, Capital and Classic FM, as well as LBC, Radio X and Gold.
Not for profit Radio- Passion Radio
Not for profit means any profits generated by the community radio station cannot be given to shareholders for example, or to benefit the people running the service. An example of this is, Passion Radio UK which is an Online Internet radio station which plays the best in Reggae, Dancehall, Lover Rock.
Passion radio have a certain target audience which is 28-50 year old's which means that it is not a very child friendly radio station as they don't have much content that is going to be appealing to them. There are certain music genres that match with this age target audience and it is for all men, women or other. The radio is a great platform because of its reach so you can reach a broad audience while still staying in a target area. For instance, public radio can reach a wide range of listeners who may share a compassionate, community drive but placing a piece of non profit radio advertising on the air at a specific time can reach a certain demographic, like morning, can reach commuters of a certain age. They don't have a specific target audience but the radio station is there for different types of target audiences.
They get funding by running on donations and community support. Due to the being reliant on donations very penny is important to a non profit, so the advertising budget must be used wisely.
National commercial radio- Talk Sport
Commercial broadcasting is primarily based on the practice of airing radio advertisements and television advertisements for profit. This is in contrast to public broadcasting, which receives government subsidies and usually does not have paid advertising interrupting the show. Also available nationally on analogue radio are two national commercial channels, namely Classic FM and talk SPORT, which is our main example for this radio station, Talk Sport.
Majority of the audience is men and only around 28% is women, so you can already see it is an audience mainly for men aged around 25-35 year old but any age can listen. The target audience will be men around 25-25 year old's and this radio talk sport will reach this target audience. I t is a bit niche because this is talk sport so it is for anyone and everyone who enjoys sport if you don't its not for you however it reaches a large target audience. Jeff will host the show with Ally McCoist, whilst Ally and Alan Brazil host Wednesday together, followed by Alan and Gabby Agbonlahor on Thursdays and Alan and Ray Parlour on Fridays. There is different men and women presenting on radio this is good to reach maybe the women and men audiences. The presenters are definitely here to make sure they keep the audience engage and entertained.
National commercial radio are all funded and run by advertising, airing radio advertisements and television advertisements for profit. They rely on this because outside companies pay commercial stations for ad placement. This type of radio is a very popular type pf radio for popular to listen too, 39.7m. adults listen to commercial radio every week, 89% of adults listen to radio every week, 20.5hrs. of live radio consumed weekly on average and £30m. radio raises over a year for charity.
