Radio M3- legal and ethical

Who regulates radio

The regulators of radio is Ofcom. Ofcom is the regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries. It regulates the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. Regulating means that they are making sure that the guidelines for media are met when using different types of media. There are many codes and rules you have to follow and the main codes are minors, impartiality, accuracy, harm, offence and fairness and privacy. The Code acknowledges the importance of freedom of expression but points out that with those rights come responsibilities, the Code has 10 key Sections containing Principles and Rules. we will follow these codes by making sure this is aimed towards the right audience and making sure there is nothing in our content that is going to effect anyone at all. Our radio station is supposed to be funny comedy by making something seem a bit dull to making it a bit of a laugh. This is why we have done this to make sure it reaches the teen target audience because we think they will find this amusing.

We are going to follow these codes such as privacy, correct information, the audience and offence. We are going to follow the privacy codes by asking anyone on the show if it is okay for us to interview them before telling their funny story, we are also going to make sure we don't share anyone's personal experiences on the show without their consent or us anything that is going to exploit anyone listening to the show. By following correct information we are going to do our research before giving the viewers any information and seen as though our actual radio show is made up we know that the information we put pout their is fake. We are going to follow the audience rule to make sure anything we say the younger children might here so we are sure anything we say is till appropriate for the younger children to hear.

Anything that we put on our show is not going to offend anyone from any culture or religion or race, we are going to make sure everything we say is appropriate for anyone and everyone even though it is targeted to a certain audience.

Who regulates advertisements

The regulator for advertising is The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and The Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP). CAP is the sister organisation of the ASA and is responsible for writing the Advertising Codes. The Advertising Standards Authority is the UK's independent advertising regulator. The ASA makes sure ads across UK media stick to the advertising rules which are the advertising codes. The Committee of Advertising Practice is the sister organisation of the ASA and is responsible for writing the Advertising Codes. Some codes that are in ASA broadcasting are compliance, recognition of advertising, misleading advertising, harm and offence, children/ages, privacy, political matters, distance selling and many more.

There are a lot of sectors and codes to consider, which means we are going to have to be careful for put advert that we put in the correct language in the advert. We will follow these codes by making sure we respect peoples privacy not adding any information about anyone from the public. Making sure we know what target audience we are advertising too so we put the right wording and language into the advert. We need to just make sure it is appropriate to put on for any age even if it targets one audience.

Copyright

Copyright is when you take something off someone else and they have copyright claims on it, you could be fined with an amount of money due to you stealing your work. A song for example can have a copyright claim which means if someone steals it then they can be fined, this is what we don't need for our radio show. What we have done to stop this from happening is add music that is not copyrighted and it is free to use without having to pay anyone to use it or use it without permission. This is good for us because we have found a site that has music for us too use the music without having the consequences because they are free to use.

If we didn't use royalty free music that means if this we aired people that own the music will be able to fine us the amount of money they have on that song. For example if it was a popular song by Beyonce that would not be good to use because she has not given use permission to use it and we haven't paid for anything to use the song so this would be a no to using the song. We may have some people not happy about the stories we use but they are made up which means that there will be no copyright issued at us for doing that.

Chosen elements

There are many codes that we need to follow when broadcasting a radio show and so we have looked through our script and we have decided on a few codes that we have followed. One code that we have followed is the crime and hate code, we have crime involving our radio station where we share stories of small crimes that have happened in our area. We have made sure that we don't encourage what is happing in our stories. Some people might think that it is okay to go out and do these things but we make sure that it is not an encouraging thing and all of our crimes are made up so we should think that they are that silly and funny they are supposed to be taken seriously.

Another code that we have followed is privacy, we have followed this by making sure we have asked permission to share the stories from our different people when we have done the interview with two teachers from our school we have made sure it is good for us to use their names and asked to speak to them. We have also made sure with Greggs that we can share there story on our radio station to make sure people are aware of their story and to make sure that people don't do it again. We make sure that this radio show is there just to make people laugh or have a bit of awareness from the things that are happening in our area.
