Magazine Unit- M2

Who regulates magazines?

IPSO stands for independent press standards organisation. They are an organisation that  regulate the newspapers and magazines, they consider the concerns and conducts its own investigations into editorial standards and compliance. They are independent from the government and they make sure the magazines and newspapers follow all of the rules. They are independent which means they are unbiased, true and fair. The Editors’ Code of Practice sets out the rules that members regulated by IPSO have agreed to follow. The Code is written and reviewed by the Editors’ Code Committee. It is enforced by IPSO. The latest version of the Editors’ Code of Practice came into effect on 1 January 2021. These codes balance both the rights of the individual and the public’s right to know.

These are the editors codes that are in place, Clause 1 – Accuracy, Clause 2 – * Privacy, Clause 3 – * Harassment, Clause 4 – Intrusion into grief or shock, Clause 5 – * Reporting suicide, Clause 6 – * Children, Clause 7 – * Children in sex cases, Clause 8 – * Hospitals, Clause 9 – * Reporting of crime, Clause 10 – * Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Clause 11 – Victims of sexual assault, Clause 12 – Discrimination, Clause 13 – Financial journalism, Clause 14 – Confidential sources, Clause 15 – Witness payments in criminal trials and lastly Clause 16 – * Payment to criminals. These are all in place for the editors to know what they have to be aware of when looking a certain situations that they are going to be righting about. I will follow these codes by making sure that I wont discusses any of these topics as it can be disturbing to the reader. I will also make sure if I do touch up on a topic like this I will place a warning for this readers because it might be triggering and I will make sure its worded with caution. However, I am not talking about any of these topics at all and so this will make my magazine free from the codes.

The codes I will be following is making sure my information is true and it is all the correct information. I don't want to be sued for false information within my magazine, so I will make sure everything I say is true and I can confidently put it out into the publics view.  I have done all of the information to make sure that all the information is true and it isn't going to cause any issues with any other companies or my own. I will only be sharing information that the artists has given me and allowed me to share so I am following the privacy code and make sure that everyone's privacy is protected. All of the information that is privacy protected and true is also going to not be offensive and the audience will be allowed to read it which is then following another code. There will be no offensive or inappropriate information being shared onto my magazine.

Ethical issues

"The ethical issues in media are impartiality, objectivity, balance, bias, privacy, and the public interest. Some ethical issues in publications are fraudulent publication, plagiarism, duplicate publication, authorship, and potential for conflict of interest." These can have different effects on my magazine.

The different codes that I have to follow does include these different ethical issues. Issues like privacy will be solved by making sure all the information is confirmed by the artists that it is all true and allowed to be shared. It will be within the publics interest due to it targeting to the right audience and it is going to be information about music which isn't offensive or false so we need to make sure that the information is fair to share for the publics interest. I don't think there is going to be anything else that is going to effect the magazine, the information and images I put on the magazine won't run into any of these legal or ethical issues. All of the information is true so there is no false information, it is not offensive, the magazine will includes everyone and anyone that wants to read it.

False information is something I might have to look at especially in the print media industry. People might think the information is false that I am sharing false information to the public. I have the permission from the artist and I am going to make sure everything she says is what I can share. This is so that I don't get sued and she doesn't want to sue me for sharing incorrect things. This is why you have to look at false information issues because you want to make sure our artist is sharing the right information. Then you can share it out into the public.

Offensive content is monitored and made sure that the information is appropriate to share. I do have some information about a sensitive topic which is bullying but I have had permission from the artist and I have made sure there was no offensive or encouraging content to be shown. This magazine is for the teens as well as the adults and I want to do good by inspiring people instead of encouraging the bad things. Everything in this magazine is positive and there is nothing going against anyone's beliefs or religions or race. It is a very diverse magazine and it is for all to share so I hope that I will not run into any of these issues but I shouldn't because there is no content that is going to be harmful to anyone. I motion slight bullying but my words are not offensive and I still keep it very light and so it is acceptable to share.

Talking about diversity i will also not run into any of these issues because i have made sure to include anyone and everyone within my magazine. I have made sure i am welcoming to all and that i am only targeting people that like or would like music and concerts. This magazine is for information and entertainment so i ma hoping i can share that with anyone who is interested. I have made sure to include everyone when it come to my article which i have an example further down this blog. I have made sure everything i say is positive towards anyone of any race, religion, age, gender and many more. I do not want to run into these ethical issues and so I have made sure everything is appropriate to share for anyone that can get there hands on the magazine.

Speaking about some legal but also ethical issues there is privacy that needs a brief mention because this is important in all media industries. I have made sure that in my magazine I have permission to share images of my artist and I have made sure everything is my own. The images and information have been taken and written by me but they have been shared by my artist which means everything I have shared is approved by her making everything true and reliable. I have to make sure my artist is telling the truth and that information can be shared which is what I have done and that is why I am able to write and share her story. This is so I don't run into any false information or privacy issues when it comes to the images or information I write.

For some things like copyright can be an issue, luckily for me I am going to be making my own designs and my own images so I don't need to use any other work. Some people in the magazine world like to copy and think its okay to take ideas and make them there own this is why all the work you do needs to be protected from other people stealing work. I have mention about copyright in blog further down.

Elements of magazine

Part of my article:

I have made sure everything in my magazine is allowed to be on the magazine, I made sure I have followed the codes by not involving anything that is going to raise issues.

start

I have made sure I haven't mentioned anything that is going to raises a concern for poppy or for anyone else going through this. I have kept the bad parts minimal and it is appropriate to share with anyone without it raising a concern. This doesn't have anything involved with bad language and it isn't encouraging, this is so that it doesn't influence the younger audience to start doing bad things. This is inspirational and good for the readers to read. I have had permission from poppy to be able to share this story and for me to tell it. This information is not going to be offensive or harmful or encouraging to anyone so I should not run into any ethical issues. This information is all true and I have permission to share show there is not privacy legal issues either.

This also continues through out the rest of the magazine, I have made sure I am using positive language and I don't cover anything that is against the editors code. I am making sure I mention things lightly about the bullying but it isn't encouraging or strong so it should be good to show in my magazine. When it comes to the middles of the magazine I am covering all the positives about music and how it can help people believe in themselves. This is all positive and kind information to share, it is also inspirational for the views and reaching the right target audience. This is not going against anything that is detrimental to my magazine. Everything that is mentioned is a innocent story about someone finding there confidence, the story also includes anyone and everything so it is very diverse for everyone.

end

I am making sure I include everyone when I am writing. This is so I don't run into any issues when it comes to only talking to one certain race or religion. This is a magazine for everyone and it is very diverse where anyone can read about it. This ethical is an issue when it is being offensive or only sharing or talking about one race. However, my magazine is here for all and anyone and I have made sure I have included everyone in this write up.

Copyright

Copyright is important in all media industries, it is important to my magazine because I don't want anything on my magazine to be flagged up as copyrighted. Copyright is when someone else is using your designs, writing, images, music, etc. This because an issue because if we didn't have copyright law we would have everyone stealing everyone's else's media. Everything I'm my magazine is done by me, the writing, imagines and the graphics. This is so I wont get a fine for copyright because it is all my own work. Everything on the magazine is my original design. I will have used other peoples work as inspiration but it would not be copied. You can find copyright issues everywhere, you can see it in photography, media companies, any company for that matter, music, adverts and more. It becomes an issue because no one wants to have the same work and no one wants there own designs copied. You can find it in all media industries and you have to make sure you do your research when doing any media project. You get a fine or sued and get in a lot of legal matters if you get caught in copyright issues, this is not god for you or your company.

My examples of getting around copyright:

This is my moldboard for my inspiration to make an NME masthead for my NME magazine, this is all image from the internets of different NME magazines. This was for inspiration and research on what I can do for my new design.

This is my example of my designs of the NME masthead for my magazine, I have not copied one single design which means I wont be involved in any copyright issue. I have used the mood board as inspiration and then I have gone to photoshop and draw my own original designs while using the mood board as inspiration. I have made sure there was no deign like mine and I have made sure that I will not be copying anything from any other company.
