Test footage

Our process and progress of doing test footage, to practice our filming skills and what we can learn to use in our filming processes.

We learnt in class that we should go through a process when it come to filming that's if we are I a group and by ourselves so this benefits us for our short film. The first step to filming is  making sure there is 'silence on set', someone needs to make sure that they are telling the whole set to be quiet due to them filming and making sure everyone knows when the camera is about to be rolling. It gives the actors some preparation too so they know they are getting ready to act. Then there is making sure the camera or sound is on, if there is any sound that is being recorded. 'Rolling' is shouted out to make sure everyone knows the camera is now on and recording. Action is the shouted to the actors to start however, all actors will wait three seconds before they will actually start acting. This is so there is enough room for editing if anything needs alternations or edits. this also leaves rooms for transitions to give you the freedom of the editing.

This is proof of my editing process:

Here I am just importing all of the clips onto the editing software, premier pro is what I am using. I am making sure all of the clips are there and deleted any I didn't want, there was only two which is good to have a look and do this first step.

I am here cutting the clips I have checked into the right length that I want it, leaving enough room for me to add some transitions and edits. I do this by pulling the side I want shortening to my chosen length.

I am now playing around with transitions just to see what type of transitions that I want in my example filming. There is a few that I want but I don't want very shot to have transitions because it then becomes too cheesy. I want to keep it clean and simple. This is where I go to the effects tool and have a play with the transitions by dragging them onto the area you want one.

This is where my final transitions are there and I am just checking what clips are smooth and what needs changing. The finalising step is crucial because you need to check and improve your work when looking at the final product.

Sound and video

I don't want to have dialogue in my movie, I'm thinking of adding a song however, when it comes to editing I might see if I will add one or not. I want to have some copyright free siren sounds that sounds like evacuation sirens that sounds ominous and brings the atmosphere to a creepy and mysterious feeling. I will add this when I am editing my film, I am hoping myself and the other actors are going to act out as if they are hearing the sound. I want there too be mainly natural sound just for that ominous feeling.

Sound production analysis

Research and identify

The first opening scene is me waking up, this will be were the title comes but but I don't want any sound until we here the alarm sound go off. This diegetic sound it going to be the first sound the audience hear. The alarm portrays the time of day and that the audience knows that it is the start of the day. This sound also being loud and the first sound it grabs the audiences attention, this sound is very familiar with everyone too so it is going to attract the audience. The sound of the alarm also foreshadows later events, there is going to be a countdown which is the end of the world at the end of the film, the alarm sound is the start of the day at the start of the film. The fact the last sound is an ending sound foreshows the beginning.

I will be using NCS sound to find the music for my short film, this is royalty free songs. it will be a quiet soft sound but I don't want it to be the main sound. I need it to be background sound and quiet, but effective enough so it isn't too silent. I have put in the link to the song I am going to use. I want this to be playing straight after the alarm sound goes off, then I want it to stop as soon as I put the tv on. I think I'll add a tv sound effect but after that I think the sirens will go on. This is the song I want to use:

Chime - Win & Lose [NCS Release] by Amira Ahmed (soundcloud.com)

Then when I go and turn the tv on, in one of my scenes I want there to be tv sounds until I want there to be a siren sound that interrupts everything, this is like an evacuation sound or a warning sound that goes off and this will be used through out the movie once it starts. This is going to be the dramatic sound that makes the while movie so I need to make sure I get that in the film. The siren sound will come on in each scene when a new character is introduced. So it is like everyone is hearing it for the first time that I my film. Then we get each a different reaction and then we get a loving scene at the end, I have decided to move two shots to the end and make it look like I am un bothered about the sirens.

At then end I am going to have a countdown come up as the last thing my audience see. I want the sound of a clock or a countdown ticking. This gives off the dramatic effect and hopefully gives that anxious feeling to the audience. This is in contrast to the beginning, the beginning is a wake up alarm for the start of the day but the ending is the ticking of a clock for the end of the world. I like how they both link together and I like that this is the ending it gives a bit of a cliff hanger and gives the audience questions.

I have changed the song after my editing stage so see blog Short Film LO3 to see what song and why I have changed it.

I have made sure that I have gotten a range of camera angles and shots I my short film. I didn't think that mine needed to be so complex because that doesn't fit the style of short film. I have taken photos in front of the camera so you can see what the camera would take a video of. This is so you can see the angles that u have used and that I have made sure the camera is in the right position for what I filming. I have made sure to include shots that would match my film, I think for what I was filming I didn't need anything that was high or low angles because I didn't want the audience feeling like they were either above the main character or below them. In this film I want the audience to feel like they are a part of it so I have made sure the shots make you feel like you are a part of tis main characters life and feeling what they are feeling. Up close shots are meant to feel personal for the character and audience and so I have many of those to make you feel like you should be a part of that characters life.

Evidence of Me Using Camera

Here I am making sure that all of the focus is in place and making sure that I am happy with the quality of the image for recording. I had to make sure that the focus was set to auto focus, this is so the camera can see what the surroundings look like and then it adjusts to that environment. I noticed when I started filming there where different issues such as when it was shot in a dark room there was a lot of noise in the image and it was making it difficult for you to see screens when they were too bright or too dark. This was okay for my film because I feel like it matched the vibe of my movie. However, in the future I will make sure there is not too much noise captured in my image and make sure it is more of a clearer shot.

Here I am making sure again that I am happy with what is in my shot, we have to make sure that I have captured everything inside of the shot. I want to make sure that within that shot I want have all the details that will make the shot. Such as when I am doing something such as opening the curtains, I need to make sure I have that full shot in there with the curtains or the shot will not make sense.

This is me just setting up my equipment and putting up the tripod, this is what I used for most of my film to make sure I am able to film myself while I have no one else helping me. This was extremely useful for when I am filming myself it, became very easy to film once I set everything up. I followed all the safety precautions if I had expensive equipment in my home. I am making sure that I don't have anything that is going to damage this property. After knowing how to set this up I felt a lot more comfortable that I wasn't going to damage anything in the future. Doing this before filming also helps me manage to learn how to set this up and out it down safely.

Here I am happy with the shot I have captured and making sure that I am happy with the shot I just filmed by checking it on the camera. I am making sure the shot was up to my standard and if not I can re shoot. This is good to do when you film just to check the footage because if you are not happy after you have filmed you will have to film it again and then this is when you run into continuity problems so make sure you check the footage before hand. This is what I did when I started filming.

Story Board comes to Life

This is the first shot of my story board and this is the first shot of my footage. I have made sure that I have placed the first shot like the storyboard. The story board has been changed throughout but the beginning shots are the same as what I have planned on the storyboard. The first shot I have taken is not the best quality because it is dark but I am wanting it to look like it is early mornings and that I have just woken up. I have a light on so you see the silhouette of myself walking up but no so much my face yet. This is the shot I wanted and I am happy with what I have taken for this shot. I use the storyboard as my guide through out filming so I know what I am doing when filming and what shots I need. The way I did this was I made sure I set up the camera to the auto focus so it is adjusting to what it can see in the shot. I placed the camera on the tripod and made sure it was all in place. Then I pressed record giving myself a few seconds getting ready and being into position. I also gave myself a few seconds before so when it comes to editing I have enough time incase I want transitions.

This is my first problem when it comes to my story. This is where we see the problem begin to happen. My phone stops working, the lights flicker or don't turn on. The way I filmed this was setting up my tripod, also filming without the tripod and I started filming the lights flickering and my reaction to that. You can see how in the storyboard shot but I decided to film it in a different room and the close up shot was a lot better. This is where I have adjusted to the environment and changed the shot to the storyboard but still flowing with the story.

This is my third reaction scene in my movie. In this shot I wanted to do it where I captured the physical emotion instead of the facial expression, a close up shot means it can be more personal to the audience. The subject it close up and personal which is then more personal with the audience. This is where I have changed the storyboard to the actual shot, I changed it because I had a different idea of showing all the emotions by linking them together instead of them being all in different households. This is a mother and child hearing about the news running together and hugging each other dramatically. I was physically operating the camera and I like how this shot turned out even though it has been adjusted.

This is my last shot of my movie, I have changed my story a bit to adjust to my circumstances. This is the last shot of me that I want to be in my movie, there will be a countdown towards the end after this shot which is going to be the last thing the audience sees but I want to edit it. This is the main character that is unbothered about the end of the world this raises questions as to who she is but it is art of the movie. The shot was a wide shot and I wanted to keep that the same. The image is clear and a good shot to use.

Risk Assessment and Safety

This is the risk assessment that I followed, I made sure that I was following this constantly through out my filming and I made sure my actors did the same. Nothing was in the way that could have been broken or knocked and if so it was moved out of the way. I didn't want to move too much because I wanted the house to look messy and natural. However, I did make sure that it was not unsafe. The equipment when it was not used it was safety put away in the bags. When they were being used there was nothing around them that could have fallen on them or been damaged by. There was a clear safe area every time I filmed so nothing would damage this equipment. These are important to us and to follow so I want to make sure that I have used this while filming reminding me on what the risks are and how I can prevent them. I didn't have any sort of cables so they weren't a risk for me and I have made sure that the area where the equipment was ended up being clear of any hazard.

I decided to do my rushes in premier pro to make it easier to log. I have all my unedited videos I took onto this full video. There are blank spaces so you know which shot is separate from the next. They are also not in order it is just pure footage.

Codes and Conventions of Rushes

Codes of conventions of a short film: length, storylines, character, twist, creativity, budget, niche audience, emotion, online distribution and opposite to mainstream.

My film is going to roughly be 4 minutes and 5 seconds long but that is with the cut versions that is not with the editing yet. My rushes are over 8 minutes so it is in the range of a short film. Typically they are minimum 3 to maximum 20 minutes. I am happy that my film will be over the minimum. The length is important because you don't want a film too short or too long or else they will not reach the short film criteria.

The story board was created for myself to follow a simple story line that I have planned put along the way. The story I found from inspiration of another short film and I wanted to follow the simple storyline. In a short film the storyline is usually condensed and it has only simple dialogue or non at all. I have followed this by keeping my story simple but it has a few different elements in it to make it not too basic. I have also added no dialogue, I didn't want any speech in it but I wanted to have sound effects and music so it isn't too silent. When it comes to the storyline I have followed the Todorov's Theory, where I am following a set layout. I have started the beginning as a normal calm setting, then we get to a small problem were not major happens but something is off, then there is the problem, then the rection to that problem and then the ending. I have made the beginning slower to build up that problem for more of a dramatic effect. The ending of the film is left off as more of a cliff hanger if anything because that is nothing that shows the acc problem or the ending of the problem, it ends on a "what if?" moment. The ending just doesn't say whether there is a bad or good ending it leaves you in suspense.

Due to the length of a short film and the simple story line we need to make sure there is also limited characters. The storyline has too be simple which means there cant be masses of characters that might lead to a confusing and too busy film. I have made sure to keep it to one main character and that there are a few more characters but they don't have names they are just the other families that are reacting to the problem in my story. I have one main character and three other characters, they are on for a few seconds in the film and there is not speech. I think this is acceptable and follows the conventions.

This is not a general convention but it is used in short films. Where there is a twist or something that is unusual that goes off in the short film. This leaves the audience wanting more and it makes the audience leaving questions to ask about the film, this shows they wanna see more. This is what I have done in my short film but only subtly, I have made the character unbothered about the end if the world which makes you leaving you wondering, why?. I think the twist is to make the simple story have not just a basic feel to it, it has something unique about it.

Some short films and not just a basic story line with a twist, some are unusual and quirky. These short stories need creativity to make sure you are hooked on the film. It doesn't have to be so advanced but something different because it is only a short film and you want to make it more usuals than others. I think I did this by making this not a scary 'end of the world' film but more of an emotional and mysterious one. By having a character that isn't scarfed and by showing love in a scary like film it shows I have thought differently than others.

The cost of a short film is very low. There needs to be as little money spent on it as much as possibly, this also helps with the creativity because you have to think of something interesting without spending loads on it. It is also only a short film so you shouldn't need hundreds to spend on it. My short film cost me nothing, I used my own house my own props that where already in the house so I am happy to say I followed the low budget convention because I didn't spend any money on this. There is nothing wrong with spending money on it and it might make it better but I didn't have to for my short film.

The audience comes into play when it comes to the short film without an audience there is no point of the film. The audience is usually a niche audience, mine is a niche audience because it is for people that like usual, mysterious, thrilling films. I am hoping that my film reaches the right audience and I how that it also attracts wider range of audiences if i release it on different platforms but it is targeted to a niche audience.

Emotion is a big one for short films, doesn't matter the emotion but it should show some. Lucky for me mine gives off different emotions and I want the audience to connector that. I have different reactions and scenes of my characters reacting to the end of the world. This is where you see them panic and rush together like its there last few minutes together all huddled in a big hug. I want this to make the audience feel sadness and love. My main character is supposed to be an unbothered character, she is meant to be unfazed about the end of the world and this raises confusion to the audience and this is what I want. We want to be asking the questions whether she is part of the end of the world or if she knows she is powerful enough to survive it. Emotion is a big part of my short film and I am happy to be following these codes and conventions.

When it comes to shot films they are largely accessible through the internet. There are many sites such as BBC and YouTube that shows short films from independent companies. My film will be distributed online to be up on YouTube, this is so that it can reach a different target audience and so that it can be distributed online as well as small mainstreaming services.

All of these codes and conventions largely make short film in opposition to mainstream which is why I hope to have followed them all to be able to be up on a mainstream. They hold a very different format and style to each other, short film will usually try to give audiences a different outlet of film to the mainstream.

The shots that I have used throughout the film are very simple. In different parts of the film I have used a tripod and handheld. Handheld camera is important because you can create different shots and it is more free for you to use. In one of the shots I do slightly follow one of the characters movements which is a pam shot and it is good to add different styles of shots in the movie. I think in the future I should add more unusual shots but I have followed the straight forward shots for the short film. I have used long and close up shots to add the personal and isolated atmosphere. The conventions of an apocalyptic thriller is isolation which is what I have shown best through the simple and long shots, I have used central angles and wide shots where my character is meant to look isolated. When there is some sort of warmth and love I have shown close up shots and that gives the audience some personal connection.

The sound through out this film is not from me, I am going to make sure that I use edited sound. The diegetic sound that I have is no dialogue in my short film, this is also a convention of an apocalyptic thriller. Ambient and quiet sounds is what is going to fill most of my film. I also want added sound effects things like a soft song in the background at the start to give it that lonely and slightly happier feeling. That is until the problem occurs and I want to have the creepy sound effects to be added to create that thrilling ominous feeling that this genre of film would have.

Evaluation/Analysis of Rushes

The camera work of the rushes are very different, I was happy with most of the camera quality. The quality of my shots were dark wasn't the best, I am still happy to use them but I am not 100% happy with the way it turned out. I did try to fix is my making it just a tiny bit lighter but I didn't want it to be too bright because I wanted it to seem like the dark morning. The camera would create lots of noise in the image which then ruined my shot a little bit because it looks very grainy. However, the shot is still up to a certain standard and I am okay to use it. It does show that the place is dark which is what I wanted to achieved. I did want to make sure that next time I can try and get that shot to a better standard. When it comes to looking at the shots when it was too bright this effect also happened, the shot ended up letting in too much light and it became all grainy and created a lot of visual noise. This is not what I wanted but it didn't ruin my shot too much, this happened no matter how much I changed the brightness on my phone so I think it was an issues with the focus. This is okay to use though and next time I don't think I am going to have bright screens in my shot.

When it comes to filming I did use a tripod. I was by myself doing this project and I didn't want to have the trouble of making someone else film for me because then I wouldn't have learnt how to film myself. I decided to use a tripod to make it easier to film alone. It was difficult having to run over to the camera all the time trying to stop the recording and checking it all. However, this was so much easier doing it with a tripod. I was also able to get all of the shots I needed using the tripod so I will be using it in further projects if I am filming myself. The shots with a tripod where still and I didn't have any shaking footage issues. The only thing I have an issue with using a tripod is I didn't make sure that all of the shots were straight so some of them look a bit off and I need to edit to make then look a little more central. This can be fixed by editing and next time to save me the hassle I will make sure all the shots are straight and central.

When it comes to directing my actors this was very simple for me to do, I let them have that freedom to react how they want but I made sure they followed my storyboard at some level. My storyboard for this part had to change when it came to my different reactions, I ended up have little time and bad weather conditions for my shots. This is when I decoded to link all of my separate reactions and put them together. I still got my single reactions but they eventually all came together creating a whole new different reaction. This was single to explain to my actors and I followed the way of filming to make sure they knew when to start and finish. Silence on set, camera rolling, action, three seconds then actors start, cut, stop a few seconds after. That is what I taught them to make filming a lot simpler. This works for filming in the big industries and it works for us too.

For the sound I decided to not have any sound so on the rushes it has sound on it but I don't want to use it. I will be using edited sound, music and sound effects but I am not using the sound on my rushes.

For the focus of the camera quality I have spoken upon this however, I will explain how it can be solved. The shots that came out a bot out of focus were the shots that were all in the dark. I do think that there isn't much to be done about this apart from I can fix it by editing the brightness in Premiere Pro. There was a lot of noise in the shot and I don't want that visually to ruin my shot but it shows the audience its dark and I am hoping I can edit it.

Inspirational Short Films

I have a few short films that I have watched that I really enjoy and just generally like watching as my own for of entertainment. There is a short film that has inspired me massively for this unit and there are some that are just inspiring in themselves and have helped me get an understanding what a short film should need and look like. This is the main inspiration for my short film, this is what I have tried to make my movie based on and what I wanted to recreate in a way. 2.25 minutes in this video is where my inspirational film starts.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/w91moqx0yp27gob9fribs/ACgQ9UVSRvIFsI78Jp6VJsk?e=3&preview=4.+BFI+ESA+SHOWREEL+FINAL+EXPORT+H264+MASTER.mp4&rlkey=45v8veckpgxf93jfaaistxqgm&st=1smvmd25&dl=0

What inspired me was that it was so emotional but also very anxiety filled short film. The thought of only having 5 minutes left of your life right there and then after a text gives off that twisty stomach feeling and anxiety filled thoughts. The panic then drops and you see everyone's raw emotions are captured in each shot, it is just done amazingly with the shots and angles. The slow motion edit on the shots were every powerful showing that emotion come through. The camera angles being up close show that personal emotion and connection with the audience and actors is powerful for this type of movie. I like this so much and I wanted to capture that raw emotion too. I think if i had more time filming I could have gotten these shots a bit more clearer and longer. However, I am happy with my shots and I feel like I have captured the raw emotion that my actors were feeling in this filming.

What was different to my film and theirs, I decoded that I was going to have a main character and a bit more of a story line instead of different reactions to the devastating news. I decided that I am going to have a main character where we see her life a bit more than anyone else's and we see that she doesn't have that emotion that everyone else might have been feeling. This main character has an unbothered outlook on life. This is different to the short film that has been my inspiration but I didn't wasn't to fully copy it I wanted to have my own twist on the storyline. I also wanted to have a more of a deeper storyline so if I was to continue making this into a mainstreaming film I have a main character with a full life I can create for her. I have been thinking about the future if I was to expand that film I have created, that I have more of a storyline.

I then have two animation short films that I have watched for years because they are very interesting and entertaining. I think they are fantastic and I am so impressed with the work and thought that has been put into this work.

Best Friend - Animation Short Film 2018 - GOBELINS (youtube.com)

The inspiration that I have found through watching this short film is the create story line, this has a big twist in it which is a code for the codes and conventions for short films. This had an amazing twist and the way it has portrayed and what I have found in this short film is there is a lot of emotion shown through out the animated characters. I really like how even through the animation the emotion was shown and the audience can feel it thorough the characters. This is what I want to do with my short film too and this is what I want to use in my short film.

There's a Man in the Woods (Animated Short Film by Jacob Streilein) (youtube.com)

This is a very creative and deep mysterious short film, I really like how they made a storyline innocent but not at the same time, the creators have made it dark and mysterious but still feeling like a child like animation. The way they have made it feel like a thriller but not at the same time links into the short film I have created, my short film is emotional but also has that hint of anxiety but mysterious atmosphere to it. This is a mix of emotions and genres but I am hoping I have played it out well with my filming and shots. I just wanted to use this inspirational short film as an example of a short film showing more than one genre and feeling in it. This short film also has that dark twist to it and that has really inspired adding twists into the short films. Mine was more of an emotional twist that I am not cared but I am unbothered about the end of the world.

Distribution

Talking about the distribution of my short film I think my short film would benefit and fit in with the BBC/ Warp film company, these are independent companies and I think my film would fit in with the independent company for the free creativity. There is a lot more creative freedom when it comes to ideas and concepts when working with an independent company. BBC is a very drama related company and it shows and streams any different dramas and that is what it is known for, my apocalyptic thriller would fit in with the drama shows that are shown within this channel. Warp films stream and show very creative based films and so my film could fit in with this aesthetic due to the unusual feelings that are creative in this film. The BBC channels feels more fitting due to the dramatic atmosphere created in my short film, this relates to a drama more and so I think BBC would be an appropriate company to stream my show on.

Meaning of my Short Film

Codes are techniques that are used to convey a particular style, theme, meaning, feeling or genre. Some codes that we have to involve when it comes to film is technical codes, symbolic codes and visual codes. Conventions, they are commonly accepted ways of doing things. They are mainly general convention in all products. There are different codes and conventions we have to follow or need to follow. These types of code have been used in film for years and we still nee to use them today.

Technical codes are created through a piece of equipment to produce the film, this could mean the camera and the angles that are created could give a meaning of the film. An example of this is if the camera is used to present a particular characters POV. Another example could be if it was a genre of a cop film or a drama and there is a view to look like CCTV, the camera is placed at a high angle to look like that. I used a tripod to steady my camera with minimal movements and no POV shots. This conforms to the conventions of the social realism / drama genre and connotes that the action unfolds in front of the camera and is realistic without feeling 'hyper real' like a fly on the wall documentary that has a handheld camera and creates a nauseating experience for the audience.

Which moves me onto symbolic codes, these are when we point the audience towards meanings that aren't always apparent or obvious. An example of this could be if we have a good and a bad guy the bad guy is dressed in black and the good guy is dressed in white. The colour of the costumes will show that they are both on opposite teams and that we represent the colour black as dark, mysterious and evil whereas, when it comes t the good guy we think of pure white. This has been used in film, print and all sorts of media. This is used in my film, I have made my shots and clothing dark and black to show that I am a dark and mysterious character but when it comes to the other acroters they are in slightly lighter clothing to show they are feeling a different way it still in dull clothing because it is a sad matter.

Visual codes are the codes I have used the most and there are a few that I will tell you about. The four different visual codes are settings, character, dress code and facial expressions. These are all very important because they represent things in the film that the audience need to find out and understand that that thing is important to the story.

Visual codes such as setting is very important and what i have used within my film. An example of this is if there was a horror film and there was an abandon house all alone with a creepy old tree next to it. This is meant to show that there is isolation in the film and it is meant to feel like you are alone just like the house, the dark and grey colours are meant to show off a mysterious and eerie feeling. That is all about the setting of the film giving the audience the feelings that they are meant to feel and the atmosphere it is going to set. I have used things such as colour, props, outfits and setting to show meaning in my film. When it comes to my main character I have made sure that the setting that she is in is isolated and quiet. I want it to show what kind of character she is through the setting. The isolated setting is what shows what type of character she is, she is a quiet and mysterious character and that is shown by having her in an isolated environment. The weird isolated feeling in the setting is what makes you wonder what kind of a character they are and that she is a mysterious character. The setting is portraying the character's personality. When it comes to the other family characters in my film you can see that they are in a close and loving space, the shots are up close and the setting is filled with warm lights, this is the setting portraying the love though out the characters and how they are shown. Love and emotion is shown through the warmth of the lighting and coziness of the setting and shots.

Another visual code is characters, things such as how the character is shown and displayed top the audience effects the movie and what it is implying. An example of this is a rom-com might have a stereotypical good looking boy who falls in love with a geeky and nerdy girl. In an apocalyptic thriller there is typically a main character and very little additional characters. This is a code that I have followed by having a main character and only little screen time of the few extra characters. The character that I have meets the unusual, a bit plain and odd character profile for the typical thriller genre. I have made sure the character looks the part, is in the right settings and acts like the part. My main character doesn't have much about her but in the film she has a very normal but plain bedroom, this gives off that she is a simple character and doesn't have much about her. She wears clothing that is plain matching the vibe of her bedroom which shows she is also a bit mysterious and we don't know much about this character. The only outcome we see is that she is so unbothered about knowing this the end of the world. The other characters have normal casual colored clothing, they show off real loving emotion, they have warmth in there characters and you can see that.

I have mentioned this a bit already but the clothing, the dress code is a visual code to think about in film. The dark, black, tight fitted clothing give off a vibe for a character. My main character wears this kind of clothing. I wanted it to be plain and simple for that mysterious and simple look. I don't people working out what kind of character she is by looking at what she is wearing, I want there to be some uncertainty from the audience. My character is meant to be different, unbothered and suspicious and I do this by putting her in plain and simple clothing so audience don't know for sure what she is up to. The clothing that my other characters are wearing are brighter and more everyday clothing, they are reflecting what kind of person they are. My bother one of the characters is wearing his taekwondo suit which shows he is sporty and lively. My dad is wearing chill clothing for his cooking night showing he is chilled back and relaxed. My mum is wearing her work/ dance uniform which shows she is dedicated and ready for her day. This is everything you can work out by the clothing of a character and this is what film will do always to make sure the audience can see what kind of character they are portraying.

The last visual code is facial expressions, this is very important to my film and I think this has been used a lot within my film. This film is very emotions and feelings based and I wanted to show this through my characters. The characters that were in my film were full of emotion, they had a very expressive emotion in there shots. I wanted them to look distressed, panicked, sad and scared. They showed this through their facial expressions and how they acted. I wanted them to show there love and feeling for each other so the dramatic  movement of a hug is what makes them look like one big panicked sad but loving family. Whereas, we look at my main character and she has barely any emotion to show. She has a shocked and surprised look when she hears and sees the news, once she had processed it which wasn't a long time she all of a sudden decided she doesn't want to act any way she is unbothered about it. The way she acts with her chilled out domineer and relaxed feeling about her you can see she has no emotion or has an unbothered feeling about it. This makes her match the vibe or the character and it shows the audience what kind of person she is.

Denotation and connotation both mean similar things and they are very important to film. The word denotation means the literal or primary meaning of a word. This is in contrast to the meaning of connotation which means an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning. Things within a film can detonate or connotate something to give meaning.

An example of this is the lighting in my film. The colour of the shots without the main character are very yellow, red and orange. These colours are normally associated to warmth and fire, this could be in a positive and negative way. I am using it in both, I want the warm tones to be represented as warmth, love, safety and comfort. Whereas I also what it to represent the start of destruction and danger is about to come. It is like it is foreshadowing the destruction that is about to happen. The chaotic feeling of the movie is shown through the drastic changes in lighting in each shot. The lighting of the cool tones and barely any lighting when the main character is at show is what relates to the characters domineer. The character is cold with their emotions and is very mysterious in show they are and this feeling is shown through the colours of the shots. Cold and blue/ grey tones are very much related to the emotions such as being sad, lonely and isolated. This is shown through the setting and colour of the lighting. This is a connotation, this is the idea and feeling that I have thought about while filming so I can connote theses meanings in my short film. Another example of this is my film has a lot of taps in the shots, a tap when I'm in the kitchen and a tap when I'm in the bathroom and they are seen a lot. I am also seen drinking water and drinking out of a fruit mug. The fire represented by the light and the salt rock lamp seen in the kitchen. All of these examples are relating to the earth and the elements of the world, earth, wind, water and fire. This is connotes the meaning of life and the world even though my film is about the world ending. I have that link to life and the earth's elements but I have put them all into an apocalyptic film, this is to relate and have the link to the end of the world. It again shoes the foreshowing of there is life and everything is normal but it is about to begin to end.

There are no props in my film that are going to be of any meaning. I have my phone which is significant. That is important within the whole film, because that is our main source of seeing the notification of the end of the world.  The phone is the only unnatural focus in the film and it is a nod to the chaos caused by modern communications; without the phone the family would be blissfully unaware but they rely on the phone for updates and this puts the characters on edge.  It is a metaphor for modern life and their reliance on technology.

The sirens have there literal meaning that is going to be the main indicator of the end of the world. However, the phone is going to have the notification that says that the end is coming. This is a big deal in the film and it just has a simple meaning, that it is the main source of information about what is going on. The phone has its significant and literal meaning and that is all I my film. It is very simple but it has its more deeper meaning instead of having a straight forward meaning.

The last way have created meaning is the editing techniques I think I am planning to do. There are two shots in my film that are similar but they are different, there ate two shots of taps in my film. They are significant because its my main source of water  the film and it has a deeper meaning. I have looked at editing techniques and I have decided I am going to use the graphic match technique. Graphic match cuts between two similar, but markedly different shots, in order to suggest some kind of important link. The two sinks will be cut one after another to show that home link and so we know that I have a deeper meaning towards that sink. This is going to be a unique and interesting edit and I think hat it will help the audience know that there is a specific link.
