Offline Edit

https://youtu.be/yrvHDEerxiI

This is the link to my offline edit, all of the clips are cut to the right length and to help me do this is by following my edit discissions log. The clips and not edited yet but they are all in order. I have left no spaces to where the editing will go it is just purely cut and in order clips.

I have just placed all of the footage here and started looking at my edit decision list and made sure I am cutting them down by dragging each side of each clip to my desired length. Sometimes the premiere pro is more precise so I have cut them down to the second I exactly need it to be cut down too. A lot of my clips are film were each shot is each action I do in different angles so I need to make sure my continuity is up to speed and looking good for each clip. I think that watching the offline edit helped me see that in the near future if I do something like this again I need to film more shots in between the shots I have filmed to make the continuity even more perfect. However, I am happy with what I have achieved for the first time making a film. I know have some improvements to do for next time but I am happy with the quality and quantity for this film. The mismatched clips make it all that interesting but it still works. In my clips I have made sure I have followed my storyboard as much as possible but there are a few things I will have to change and a few things to be editing too.

Here I have gone through all of my clips. I have watched back on all of the clips pout together but some of the clips didn't flow like I wanted them too and so I had to go over them and make sure I cut them down to a more fitting length. This was simple enough to do and I am happy with how it turned out towards the end. This clip was too long and it needed to be shortened down and so I changed the length by dragging the clip to the desired length and seeing if it flowed. This is a lengthy process but I am happy that I went through it more that once because there were many tow more clips that needed changing. Other than that I was happy with all of the shots that I have chosen to use and the order it is put in.

There were two shots that I had put into the film in a different order and so I have decided to change the order in which they go in when I filmed everything. Two clips were filmed and I have changed them to be at the end of the film. The last clip wont be the last thing the audience see because I need to edit a countdown into my film but it is the last filming clip that they will see. This is the clip of me chilling and not caring about the end of the world at all, this establishing shot sets the scene and tells the audience that she is an unphased character and a mysterious on at that. This shot makes people ask questions as o who she is and why she is so unbothered but those questions wont get answered because it ends on such a cliffhanger. This is something one audiences like and some don't but that is there choice to like it or not. I know a cliffhanger is an apocalyptic thriller convention and so I wanted to add a simple one in there.

Here I am making sure all of the clips are moved together and that there and no blank gaps that seem to be in the way. No I have my final and perfected offline edit which helps me see what editing I want to use and where it all needs to be. This offline edit helps me see where all of my editing skills are and what kind of shots I have been able to produce. Though out my film I have used crosscutting/ parallel shots, all of my shots are cutting from one action to another creating the full version of what I am doing. Each shot is a central shot that cuts from each action I am doing, this is to create continuity and that kind of film where it is not all flowing it has some different shots to keep it looking unique and so you don't know what the next shot or action is going to be. This creates questions and a mysterious vibe to the film because it is not predictable and it is different so it keeps it intriguing. My film is a very simple film but I wanted to have this crosscutting to make sure my film has a different technique used to make sure it is interesting and has a different feel to it. I am not making the traditional apocalyptic thriller film and so I needed a technique to keep the film intruding as well as the unusual character.

These shots have been changed in from the one in the story board to the one in my film, this kind of scene is still in my movie but it is done a bit differently. I wanted to get all of these certain shots of people reactions in different locations but due to the weather and my actors availability these shots were not able to be taken. However, similar shots were able to be taken such as my family members and their reactions through out my scene for this part of the film. The reactions had the same concept as my storyboard nut they are just doing different things when they are reacting to the news. The actions are when they are cooking or when they are watching tv but then all of a sudden the phone goes off with the end of the world news and the sirens go off. This is the same concept as my storyboard but it is done differently to what actions they are doing. This is when the storyboard and my filming has to be adjusted to the circumstances. This was easily done and done to good quality for my short film.

This was the ending shown in the storyboard but this had to change. Due to the weather being very bad storms I had to change the ending to where I am inside but I didn't want the indie environment with the messy end of the world idea. The ending was meant to be me a few years into the apocalypse with a muddy face and in the outdoors. Again, this could not happen due to the bad storms so I decided to make it more of a simple ending but still raises questions. This ending I have now filmed is were I go chill out and I'm just letting the news not get to me. I am unbothered and it doesn't make me panic. This is the last part of filming content the audience will see however, the real ending is going to be a countdown to give a bit of a fear factor and give the audience a bit of anxiety as if they are a part of this too and that once the countdown gets to 00:00 they are on edge that something might happen. I think this is great for a thriller convention and it gives the audience that anxious feeling i want to achieve.

Final Edit

Here I am adding the transitions in that I think are needed to either break up a piece of footage or if the continuity isn't the best I will go and add a transition as if it was time passing away and it has transitioned into it. Here is the first transition I added, it was the dissolve into black and I think it is the cleanest and most effective transition you can add. However, I don't want the transitions to be repetitive so I will only be adding them when needed but not for each shot.

Here I have a different type of dissolve transition, this one is called film dissolve. I can an overlay of the new shot on top of the old shot, this is what the film dissolve transition does and this is so it looks more interesting and so all the shots are not one after another. As you can see the simplest way of adding a transition is dragging the transition from the settings are to the film area that you want it to be at.

Here is another example of a dissolve transition that I only use once to keep it simple, I have decided to use an unusual one called cross dissolve and I have only used this once too because I don't want to overload with transitions but I think it needed to be there because I needed more of a flow within the two shots. Through out the short film I have added the simple transitions I have needed to make the shots flow however, the filmed was film to flow already and I wanted the shot transitions to be very basic when it came to filming so I didn't need to edit much into my work.

I dragged over the screenshots of the countdown and placed them in the areas I needed to have the countdowns. there would have to be cut down to just one second long and I did this by pulling the end of the photo to make it shorter. I repeated this for the amount of times I needed to have the countdown. I want the ominous feeling for it so I will add sound to make it sound like a real countdown. I didn't use any transitions because it didn't need any for this certain part of the film. It just needs to look like a digital countdown and I think I achieved this well.

I have used a website that creates these countdown effects for you. You change the settings on the website to what you desire and then I just used the screenshot key on my keyboard and dragged it over to photoshop to create a bigger back screen to make sure it fills out the screen for my movie, the timer needs a background.
Website for digital clock countdown- Online Digital Clock Face Generator

The way I did this I used the rectangle tool to back the background, then I dragged the screenshot over and made sure I have it the size I want. It was pretty simple but I had to repeat this over again for a few more shots. I change the time and just went through this process again. I screenshotted the final outcome and this is what I used.

This is the finished product that I am going to use for my countdown throughout the movie to give the film the effect of when things are going to end. This movie is about the fear inflicted into the audience about the end but not knowing what comes after the end. I think that the red is significant because is connotes the meaning of blood and the black colour connotes death and darkness. I have used this within my film because I know it is going to give the audience that fear factor within the film. The simple ticking of the clock is going to give the ominous atmosphere I want to put the audience through. The dramatic end of a black screen is significant because it also gives that cliff hanger and the anxious feeling. I will just edit this into the film as explained already.

This is the original colour of the shot however, I didn't ant it to be so harsh. I wanted a more softer colour and for the suite that my brother is wearing needs to be white instead of this strong yellow colour. I think the yellow hint but I don't want everything to be too harsh so I used a tool to make it look less sharp and more of a softer white and yellow hint.

Here is the final look of this tool, there is still a yellow tinge to it but it isn't blinding and it looks more professional. I needed it to look more realistic and have a more softer feel to it even tough it is a dramatic point. I needed this shot to be warm, all the shots with the family in it are all loving and happy and I needed a warm colour involved in these shots so you get the connotation without even knowing. The warm shots are representing the love and happiness and warmth pf the image which is what the family are expressing and so I still needed this shot to be warm and have that yellow/ orange hint. However, I didn't want the suit my brother is wearing to be overly yellow because it looks unrealistic so I used this tool to make sure the colour is still warm but has that whiter and brighter appearance.

I used something called white balance and by touching something of a certain colour it will make it go white or something close to this. I needed what my brother was wearing in a white colour instead of yellow and so I used this tool to make it have a whiter feel to it, this is just to make it look more realistic and not too fake with a bright light yellow hint.

This is a part of my film were it was too dark to see what is happening and I decided to ever so slightly make sure that the exposure is turned up so it lets more light into the shot and so it is slightly brighter but it does not effect the shot too much. I needed to make sure you can see what is going on but I needed it to be still dark like the other shots because it is still in the dark at this point. I needed it to look like it was still night time/ morning before the curtains is opened. I just slightly made sure the exposure was up by a few points, this is done in the colour setting in Premier.

I was originally playing with different fonts however, I couldn't find anything that I wanted to use that didn't look fake but also look unique. There isn't many fonts that were there for my to use so I decided to find some inspiration buy a film called 'Bird Box' and that is an end of the world film too. The poster for it has the text simple but the letters are moved far apart. This is what I wanted to do and so I did this by the text settings, this just allowed me to sperate the letters apart.

This is the end shot that the audience will see, this is just a simple end credits shot. I have added all the people that worked on this film and I have added a simple get front because I want it to be clear and visible for the audience to see. I also wanted it to look more professional like other movie end credits so I wanted to have this clean slick look to it.

Edit Decisions Log

Here is my edits decision log, I followed this as I was cutting and editing my short film. Here I am getting an idea of where I can add transitions and how long my film is going to be. During the editing stage I had to make a few changes and add a few transitions though out the film to make sure that everything was one flowing continuous film and there was nothing that looked out of place.

In this log there are two shots that are shot and edited in a different order, shot MVI_9749 and MVI_9750 are filmed in a different order to what I have edited it in. These two shots are now moved to the end of the film, this was to create a bit of a change in time and reality. The change from it being shots of my to being shots of a different family experiencing the same thing but in a different setting with different people, then it cuts back to me the main character by herself in a cold and isolated setting. This is the sort of emotional effect I wanted to give were you see me alone then a happy warm family and then me alone again and its that sort of feeling sorry for the young girl but it raises questions as to why she is alone and isolated.

Sound

Here I am taking all of the sound that were captured in the video clips, I wanted to add all of the sounds by editing and using copyright free sounds to make sure I have a clear and crisp sounding sound effect. I want them to be edited because I knew I wasn't going to achieve the sounds by recording them, I needed to have a sound edited such as a siren sound because I couldn't make that myself through recording.

Here I locked the video so non of the video clips would be deleted. Due to me only having sound and video I don't need to protect or lock anything. Here you will just right click onto the sound area and press delete, this is where the sound from the recordings will be deleted and now I have video clips with no sound. I now have the opportunity to research and look for the sounds I am going to use, using a free copyright site called Pixabay.

Here I am choosing a sound for each different piece of sound I want to add in. I am just starting off with the easy and more noticeable sounds that I can find. Here I am listening and searching for alarm sounds because it is going to be the first thing that my audience will hear. You download the sound to your files and then add this sound onto the premiere pro software which is where all the film clips are. This sound is the sound that I
chose to use for my opening sound effect for the alarm sound.

Here is the area and example of where the sound goes, this is the same area where the old sound used to be. From the files document you drag the sound into this are and then you can edit and cut down the sound how you want. By dragging in each end of one sound clip that can cut down the sound if its too long and that is what I have done for the first three sounds, then I want a fade in and out for some sounds so when clicking of each sound effect there are two grey boxes on each end of the sound and that is where you can fade in or out of each sound.

I used a new song in my film called Calm piano, I wanted a different song because I wanted no speaking in my film and the song I originally had didn't fit the calming vibe that I wanted to give in the film. The part of the film that has the music in I am doing some simple daily activates and I wanted to make it sound causal and positive but it also having a very calming fell to it. This is why I changed the song, originally it was too lively and I didn't look lively while I was doing these actives so it didn't look right after editing the film. This is why the song has been toned down with a more simple calming song, the piano can be taken in different many ways when it comes to meaning. Piano's in films usually indicate that there is some sort of emotion that is going to be felt during this stage of the film and for my film at this point I am just looking to have a simple and peaceful feeling. This is shown through myself and the music. That is why I needed a different approach on the music. The song was found on Pixabay, which is where I found all of my sound effects and songs. This is a royalty free site and I will not run into any legal issues when it comes to copyright laws, everything I have used is copyright free so I am able to use and take these sounds and put them onto my film.

I do not have any non- diegetic sounds in my film apart from a small section of my film has a piece of music added in to make it seem a bit more busy and not so quiet, I did not want to have any sounds that were created by the shots I made and I didn't want to have any dialogue in my film either so everything that is in my film are made from sound effects. All of the sounds I used are sound effects. Diegetic sound is any sound that comes naturally from the world of the video. Any of the noises you could hear in a scene within the video would be classed as diegetic. This includes on-screen sound such as dialogue, alongside off-screen audio like chatter, applause, and more created by people in that set. Within my film i have decided to cut out all of the diegetic sound and made sure I didn't have any, this is due to me not wanting there to be any issue when it comes to editing and I just wanted to have a bit more of a different and dramatic sound so I used sound effects to achieve this.

Non- diegetic sounds are sometimes known as commentary or non-literal sound, non-diegetic sound is any type of sound that does not specifically exist within the world of the film itself. It's the type of sound that characters in a film are not able to hear, but that we can. When I am editing I can hear the sounds meaning the sound effects but the characters on the film don't hear anything they are acting out that they can hear something but the sound will not be shown till edited onto the film. Sounds such as sirens, alarm sounds, ticking of a clock, chopping of a cutting board, phone sounds and many more I have found all the copyright free sounds so I don't run into any legal issues and I have found all the sound effects from there.

Final Short Film- https://youtu.be/fc2jNBbyCs0

This is my final and finished completed film with all the credits mentioned and title. I think that it came out just how I planned it too and it gives the feelings I wanted to to show when you watch it so I am happy and impressed with the outcome.
