Rushes
These are just some rushes that i have filmed were i needed to adjust the lighting and or camera settings to make this shot better. There were improvements while i was filming and i could adjust them by using the lighting or using the camera settings.
Here are screenshots of my rushes and how i have adjusted the setting, lighting, positioning and more.
example 1.
Here are the first shots that i took for the music video. In these scenes i am using a phone tripod to make sure that i can use my hands and film without having to hold the camera. This work perfectly and i got the shots that i wanted. However, when i was filming the first few shots it looked too dull for the dark location and i didn't like this. I am happy to use the first shots but i wanted to have a lot more light and colour. This is when i changed the shot and used these flashing lights, these are facing me from a high angle and they are very bright. The lights are flashing multiple colours. This just enhanced my shot, it brought colour into the shot and it brough a different atmosphere. The lights then brightened the subject up meaning me singing and so it shows who the main subject of this shot is. It is a close up shot and this work very well for what i was looking for.
example 2.
Here in the first shot this was the first time tying it, i wanted something far away to make sure i get the whole stage in and so that everyone would fit. However, after reviewing the footage i wasn't happy with how far away this shot actually looked and that the main focus was meant to be our heads/ faces. This angle and this shot just didn't look like the main focus was us. This is when we decided that we was going to do a mid/ close up shot and this is when the lighting worked much better and it was a lot more focus on us being the main subject. The lighting adjusted itself on the camera and made us look brighter so you can see our faces a lot more clearer. That was due to moving the shot from being a wide shot to a close up/mid shot. Which i think looks a lot better and shows who the main subject is.
example 3.
I'm not sure if this is noticeable to people but when we filmed this shot its very dark and so when i am editing i will like to adjust the brightness every so slightly just to make it look a little brighter. However, in this first shot the angle was very off and it was straight, also my head is cut out of half of the shot and so i didn't like how close it was either. This needed to be adjusted. The camera was moved further back and it was adjusted to be on more of a central angle. We as a group moved closer together and more on a diagonal so you can see us all. This just ended up being a much better shot towards the end.
These are my rushes of all of the footage no matter if its good or bad. All of the footage is put on one video. This includes all the bad and good pieces but it includes the full versions of clips. When it comes to editing i want parts of the clips to be cut and moved about in different orders but for now everything is just put on one video. This also helps me plan out what i am going to do for the final edit.
Camera Settings
The equipment that i used for this filming is an iPhone camera, a phone tripod, led lights, stage lights and flashing led lights. I didn't do anything to my phone lenses, i didn't use a camera for filming because i wasn't comfortable using a camera because there would have been a lot of issues. My studio floor is very bouncy and because the girls were dancing on the floor if i was going to use a tripod and a camera it would have fallen over and been damaged due to the bouncy floor. Also i was filming for a long time and i had more access to filming my phone than filming with a camera. I was also at risk of more damages with lenses and the tripod due to the environment so i was more than happy with using my phone and a smaller phone tripod.
I am these choices to site what's best for me and when i am filming. The lighting for these scenes were good for my shoot because they are safe, already installed into the studio walls and they gave me the effect that i wanted. All the girls followed my risk assessment and they made sure to be safe when near the stage equipment and the lighting. They stayed a reasonable distance away from the stage edge and the equipment. They didn't handle the lights and they didn't look into them when dancing so they wouldn't get blinded or distracted. This was good and safe for them all. I also made these choices because they looked good for my shots. The phone camera was clear and easy to use because its so light and easy to move around. The lights were bright and colourful which is what i wanted for the setting/ atmosphere.
The iso and exposure time on an iPhone is not adjustable, i had the settings on my iPhone on the default setting, i did trail shots to make sure i was happy with that and i shot all my shots in different colours lighting to make sure that i was happy with the setting and the lighting on my phone. If i wasn't happy with it i would either change the colour of the lighting that i used (led lights) or i would changed the angle of the shot. Moving the camera closer or further away from the subject. This helped me massively and so i didn't have to worry about any of the settings on my phone when it came to lighting. If i am unhappy when editing i can change brightness and setting when it comes to editing but when i was filming i didn't change the settings. However, if i wasn't happy with the shot i would make sure i changed the scene around it meaning the lights, the angles, the shots and the space around me.
I chose to film portrait instead of landscape because i feel like this needed to have the connection to the TikTok style. I wanted my video to be seen by many on different platforms. My target audience will be on the TikTok platform and so i wanted my music video to have a style that related to that. TikTok is very popular and especially with a younger age group, i wanted the connection to be there to make my music video to be more familiar if it is more familiar people will be interested and curious. It is also different too i haven't seen a music video look like a TikTok format. People will be more drawn to something they have seen before, i thought that if it is posted on TikTok i will get recognition from that target audience but if i also post it on other social media types like YouTube i will also get a different target audience. I want to reach as many different people as i can throughput different platforms and this can happen through those types of social media forms.
Camera Settings 2
Like i explained in the first part of the camera settings i was talking about how i didn't want to change my camera settings but i wanted to change the scenes around me and change the set to make sure the shot was right for me. One thing i used do do this was the angles of the shot. The angles can change everything and when it comes to filming it can always change. There was a shot where i wanted the main subject to be in front of the camera but when i filmed it i was on too much of a diagonal angle that it didn't look clear and the lighting was too dark. This then meant i had to adjust my angle to be in font of the subject when she does her trick and so i got a clear shot of her body shape she was making and the lighting had brightened up due to the angle change. This then made the shot a lot clearer. This happened throughput my filming which then helped get the best shot that i needed.
Then the next thing that i could change was the shot itself. I was not happy with the spacing i could change how far away the camera was to the subject and that could adjust the brightness, clearness and overall outcome of the shot. When i was filming a shot i wanted the main subject to be the groups faces/ head but the first shot was filmed way too far away meaning the main subject wasn't us and that it was too much of a wide angle to do this shot and so to fix this i had the camera moved closer and on a higher/ central angle helping the main subject be our faces and the brightness to be a lot more enhanced.
The next and final thing that i was able to change was the lighting. In my first shots when it was just me i wanted to have close up shots however, when i reviewed the shots they looked too dull and not interesting enough. The first shots had stage lighting on a high angle. This was good but not interesting enough. This is when i added the led lights that would flash multiple colours and be so bright it would lighten my face up and make it a lot more fun/ interesting. The lighting would be changed for each girl when being filmed because things didn't match there outfits and made them look too dark and not clear. When filming each girl we changed each colour to make sure it was the brightness and best for them. This then helped make sure that i got a clean shot and that it looked unique for each shot.
Lighting
Like i have stated previously, i did decided to film inside and i wanted to use the lighting that was already at the studio. This includes, stage lighting which are bright white filament lights that are on a high angle, LED flashing lights that are also placed on a high angle and LED floor lights that can be plugged in and have different settings to make the lights different colours. I liked both the low and high angles of the lighting. it got the different effects of the subjects. This wasn't 3 point lighting but having just the two types of lighting on two opposite angles got an effect which i liked. It casted shadows but in the right places to show that there was depth in the shot but it didn't take the brightness away from the girls faces/ outfits. This worked really well with the close up and wide shots. When comes to the close up shots the coloured lighting worked better because it was brighter and different but the stage lighting on the high angle gave a dramatic type of effect and set the mood. This is like Chiaroscuro lighting when it creates a mood depending on the angles and this is what the high bright stage light did. It was a cooled toned colour to so it agave a moody and dramatic stage effect which is what i was looking for and so i was happy with all the lighting that i used.
How i did this wasn't me, the lights were already fitted to the wall on a high ceiling angle and i used turned them on. When it comes to the floor LEDS i made sure t put then in a place that was safe and where it looked effective and just left them there. They had remotes to change the colour so it was a really easy and simple set up for the lighting.
Here are some exmaple of the lighting and the layout of all of the lighting used. These are some of the effects created too.
