Genre

The gerne of my music video is a dance/ music video. It is there to entertain and it is there to show off dance and music. I say it is a dance video because that is the style I'm wanting it to be. I want it to be there to show off the dance and the music linked together. I'm creating this meaning of dance and togetherness because in the video we have a group of dancers together and they are showing off their moves. We have all of us in shots together where we look like a good strong team and that shows the togetherness of the video that we can all dance and be happy together. Also, the song is called 'please don't stop the music' , this suggests the party and dancing music go on and have a good time !! That is what i wanted to show off in my music that link of don't stop and be happy, dance it out and be entertained. People can join in with the dancing that the video has in it and they can sing along. That is the meaning and link to my video and the song with the style included.

The camera and lighting definitely plays a bit part in the music video and it makes it unique. I think that my camera angles and shots give a very good link into the style. One link is that i filmed portrait and close up of me singing the lyrics and it is in a montage of clips. The style is like a TikTok video. That is very popular at the moment and it will link in with my target audiences for this music video young kids and older adults. Due to it looking so familiar it will encourage people to explore deeper into what it is. I have decided that i will have many different camera angles to make it interesting and have a different outlook each time with different meanings. I had close-ups which is personal for the audience. I then had wide angles to get that clear view of the dancers and so the audience can see them and join in with the moves. I also did that to add depth and texture to the video so it wasn't the same all the way through. I had high angles to make the audience feel like they are on top of the world and having a great time singing and dancing. This all links into how the audience will feel and how the link to the style can have such an effect on the video.

I also looked at the lighting and how it would have an effect on the style of my video. IO knew when i started i needed lights a lot of them and all colourful,. This is what i did so i know i had a dance studio full of lights and i had so many different ones i could use. I had gotten all the lights on that was going to make an effect on the video. Colours in the video were all different and bright, they all changed i had pinks and purples with blues and greens. Oranges and yellows, i had flashing lights with loads of different colours and it was just such a vibe with that disco like atmosphere and that's what i wanted. The lighting is important and that's why i had so much of it in all different colours to match the style of my video which was to resemble a club in the disco times with so many colours just to lighten up the mood. This worked perfectly and event the plain neutral coloured lights were effective. Adding the neutral colours gave us a break from the coloured ones and it acted more like a dance stage spotlight which created a whole different effect. I showed you the main subject and what was important to be looking at at that moment in time. The effects of the lights worked well with my music video and matched the style amazingly.

Theorists

Looking at two important theorists now, i have Tzvetan Todorov & Rick Altman’s theories. Tzvetan Todorov theory was the narrative structure, the equilibrium theory. This is where there is a structure to the media. The equilibrium, disruption, recognition, resolution, and new equilibrium. This means a piece of media so a story for example will start off with a beginning, then there is a build up to a problem, then there is the problem, then the solution to the problem and then the end. This is what many movies, films sorts and all different types of media use to follow a structure. Then we have, Rick Altman’s theory which is a genre theory. Were a piece of media can be categorized and understood through their conventions and audience expectations.

I personally think that i have considered the genre theory. The codes and conventions that i have used and the style i have created makes you think this music video is a dance video and that it shows off that disco style. I have used lighting that resembles the disco style with lights of all colours and flashing lights. I have edited like a montage which is typically found in a music video. I have also shown that the camera angles resemble the TikTok style and the different actives in the clips makes it look like its matching the genre i have chosen. The jumping around and the posing just links into a music video convention and that is how you can see my style straight away. This is how the theory has linked into my music video style/ genre.

However, i don't think that i have followed Tzvetan Todorov's theory. This theory is based off something too much like a story but that's not the kind of song or genre i have chosen. I have chosen something that is a bit more all over the place and non of the clips are in a specific order. It is just a montage of different clips put together to make a pattern that links in with the dance like style. Whereas, this theory is more structural and not anything like i was looking for. Yes, i wanted to follow a right order too but it wasn't so set like this theory is. This structural theory is person for a music video and a song that has a storyline to it such as the song '7 years' by Lukas Graham, this was a very structural song and follows a story line whereas my song doesn't. My song also repeats itself and so this theory wouldn't match that either.

Mise En Scene

The -performance in the music video is a very fast dance and it links in with the rhythms and beats of the song so I'm happy they both worked together. It is also very fun and energetic that people can join in and can have a boogie. If the girls didn't look like they wanted to be there and there was not bouncy effort or enthusiasm then you can see that that would make people not enjoy it. If they look sad and not like they are having fun then the audience isn't going to want to have fun or join in. The performance needs to match the songs atmosphere and so that's what they did and then the audience can see that they are enjoying it so they can too. That's how a performance can have an effect on an audience view. Which then dangers the meaning of my video. The meanings that i want people to get up and dance and join in when they watch my video that they too can have boogie and want the music to keep playing. People need dance for many reasons and music and that is what i want to show in my video that you need to get up once in a while and just let loose have a good time and have a dance. However, if the performance looks bad and doesn't want to make you dance and if it isn't matching the upbeat vibe of the song then the meaning is void and then there is no point of it. Yes, performance is very important in my music video.

There are many elements to mise en scene, makeup, hair, costumes and props. Also, camera angles/ shots, lighting, editing and location. These are all very important when it comes to creating media. My music video has a theme and that is dance video with a disco twist. This meant that my dancers needed to come with the right hair, makeup and more ands that is what they did. Plain but still bold makeup to match with the vintage vibe. I then wanted some old disco but club like clothing that you would see out and about in clubs. Then i wanted hair to be dance functional but still looking like a party environment and that's exactly what they did. This matched so well with the vibe of the music video and that all the colours linked well with the lighting. The lighting and camera angles are also equally important. I had so many different lights to make sure that i could achieve that disco party look and that's what i did by using different colours and making them flash and look different. I am also glad that i could do so many different camera angles it really made the jump cut editing look different. The clips and angles would link in with the style of my music video by adding that personal close up element and then that wide angle shot so you can make out the dancers clear moves. It is all very important when it comes to linking with the style and genre.

Summary

I have some favourite shots that create meaning to my video. I have the shots of the dancers dancing together. This makes people want to jump up and dance and hopefully it can make people want to copy their dance and join in. Which brings a nice meaning that dance can just brighten up your day and just makes you feel more relaxed and happy. It is also brilliant exercise for people who don't like exercise dance is a great way to get your heart pumping and blooding running while still having fun and listening to music. I also have a lovely slow motion shot of us all in a huddle jumping up and down arms in the air and the music playing. This just reminds me of togetherness and that you can grab anyone a friend or stranger or family member whoever it may be and can be listening to music and having a good time no matter what is happening. Music has been around for millions of years and it is there to make you feel something. The song i picked is very upbeat, joyful, cheeky and makes you want to dance. This is what i want to show in my music video and i am confident i did that.
